In an endeavor to bolster commitments to biodiversity and address the challenges posed by climate crises, Colombia has launched its official logo for the upcoming COP16 convention. Embracing the theme of ‘peace for nature’, the event aims to underscore the imperative of fostering harmonious relationships between humanity and ecosystems.
Scheduled to take place from October 21st to November 1st, 2024, the forum themed ‘peace with nature’ is poised to convey a powerful message of global significance. Minister Susana Muhamad of Colombia, joined by David Cooper, Acting Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, unveiled the emblematic logo during the sixth United Nations Environment Assembly.
The chosen symbol, the flower of Inírida, holds deep cultural significance in Colombia. Renowned for its resilience and perpetuity, this endemic flower from Guainía epitomizes the enduring unity sought amidst biodiversity concerns.
Minister Susana Muhamad emphasized the symbolic resonance, stating, “The flower of Inírida represents the essence of biodiversity. Its everlasting nature embodies our aspiration for perpetual coexistence with the natural world.”
Acknowledging Colombia’s leadership in biodiversity and climate discourse, Mr. Cooper praised the selection of the Inírida flower as the emblem for COP16. He noted that the flower’s beauty mirrors Colombia’s rich natural diversity while symbolizing global resilience in combating climate adversities.
The Inírida flower, inspiring the creation of the logo, now serves as the emblematic representation of Colombia at COP16. Synthesizing the 23 global goals of the Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framework and the 13 ecoregions of Colombia, the logo conveys a message of reconciliation, jubilance, and national unity in advancing this pivotal environmental endeavor.
Mr. Cooper commended Minister Muhamad, the Colombian government, and the city of Cali for their unwavering commitment to hosting COP16. He underscored the significance of the chosen logo in epitomizing Colombia’s environmental stewardship and global leadership.
Furthermore, it was revealed that under the overarching theme of Peace with Nature, COP16 in Colombia will catalyze global collaboration in promoting and implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
