Rainfall, Temperature Forecast 30 August -06 September

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the Darfur regions of Sudan and western Ethiopia, with warmer-than-usual temperatures across the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) as predicted by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center(ICPAC).

Total rainfall 

  • Heavy rainfall (greater than 200mm) is expected over a few places in western Ethiopia.
  • Moderate rainfall (50-200mm) is expected over southern Sudan, central and western South Sudan, western Ethiopia, western Eritrea, and a few places in central Uganda.
  • Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is expected in central Sudan, eastern South Sudan, central Ethiopia, parts of western Eritrea, most parts of Uganda, parts of central to western Kenya, and coastal regions of Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.
  • Dry conditions are expected over Rwanda, Burundi, western and southern Tanzania, eastern and northern Kenya, south-eastern Ethiopia into northern Somalia, and northern parts of Sudan.

Note: 1 mm of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter.  

Rainfall Anomalies 

  • Wetter than usual conditions are expected over southern Sudan, western Eritrea, northern and western Ethiopia, and a few regions in eastern and north-western South Sudan.
  • Drier than usual conditions are expected over south-western and north-eastern South Sudan, central Ethiopia, western Uganda, and parts of western Kenya

Exceptional rainfall

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in most parts of the Darfur regions in Sudan, western Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

Mean Temperature

  • Hot temperatures (above 32 ℃) are expected over northern Sudan, the Afar region of Ethiopia, parts of Eritrea, Djibouti, and coastal regions of north-western Somalia.
  • Moderate to high temperatures (20-32℃) are expected over central to southern Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, eastern and northern Kenya, Somalia, south-western Ethiopia, western Rwanda, western Burundi,  and western and southern Tanzania.
  • Mild temperature conditions (less than 20℃) are expected over central to southern Ethiopia, central to western Kenya, a few regions in northern to southern Tanzania, and western regions of Rwanda and Burundi.

  • Warmer than usual temperatures are predicted over most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA).

The weather forecasts are done within the IGAD region detailing the predictions of rainfall and temperature to assist in early planning for responses in action to oncoming changes as predicted by ICPAC.
