Rainfall Forecast for Central-Southern Tanzania, Warmer Temps in Greater Horn of Africa

  • Moderate rainfall (50-200mm) is expected over southern Rwanda and most parts of Burundi and Tanzania.
  • Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is expected in Uganda, central to western and coastal regions of Kenya, south-western Ethiopia, and parts of northern and southern Somalia and coastal regions of Tanzania.
  • Dry conditions are expected over most parts of Sudan, South Sudan, northern and eastern Kenya, western and eastern Ethiopia, and central Somalia.

Note: 1 mm of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter.  

Rainfall Anomalies 

  • Wetter than usual conditions are expected over parts of Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia and most parts of  Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania. 
  • Drier than usual conditions are expected in a few regions in western and southern Tanzania.

Floods update 

  • Flash floods are likely anticipated in flood-prone areas of southern Tanzania. 

Temperature 06 – 13 February 2024 

  • Moderate to high temperatures (20-32℃) are expected over most parts of South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, eastern and northern Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
  • Mild temperature conditions (less than 20℃) are expected over parts of central to northern Sudan, central Ethiopia, central to western Kenya, and western regions of Rwanda and Burundi.

Temperature anomalies

  • Warmer than usual temperatures are predicted over most parts of the GHA.

Heat stress

  • Elevated levels of heat stress are expected in eastern Tanzania, eastern Kenya, southern Somalia, and eastern South Sudan.
