Africa has long been celebrated for its vast economic potential. Home to the world’s youngest population, it is uniquely positioned to lead the global transition toward a sustainable economy.

Beyond its abundant green energy resources, including solar, hydro, and geothermal power, the continent’s greatest asset lies in its youthful talent.

Governments and corporations increasingly invest in innovation hubs, resource centers, and talent development programs to harness this potential and drive inclusive economic growth.

TECNO’s initiative to renovate 100 football pitches across African communities is the latest in a landmark project to create opportunities for Africa’s youth by investing in grassroots development.

A leading global technology brand, the project partnered with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which provides an opportunity and a pathway for growth in the grassroots.

According to the Africa Youth Employment Clock, in 2025, about 121 million youth aged between 15 and 35  are unemployed or classified as “not in education, employment, or training (NEETs)”, representing 23 percent of this age group, which makes up more than 60% of the continent’s population.

Sports play a particularly crucial role in disadvantaged communities and informal settlements, where opportunities for positive engagement are often limited. Safe and accessible football pitches offer young people an alternative to crime, drugs, and other social challenges, while instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience.

Emily Njeru, Deputy Director of Cultural Expressions & Creativity, Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, says, “We must move a step further – train our young people how to monetize their creative content- and help citizens unlock their hidden wealth.”

Moreover, President Ruto emphasized the importance of Africa investing in its workforce for growth.

“Africa must fix itself in a lane that will see the exploitation of skilled, educated, and productive manpower to sustainably accelerate the continent’s economic growth,” he said.

TECNO is the first mobile device company to invest in African grassroots sports infrastructure. Beyond improving pitches, the initiative represents an investment in Africa’s future, ensuring that talent has the environment and opportunity to shine.
