Rainfall of Moderate to Heavy in Burundi, Tanzania

  • Moderate rainfall (50-200mm) is expected over most parts of Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.
  • Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is expected in Uganda, southern South Sudan, central Ethiopia, western, and coastal Kenya.
  • Dry conditions are expected over most parts of Sudan, northern South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, and northern and eastern Kenya.

Note: 1 mm of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter.

Rainfall Anomalies 

  • Wetter than usual conditions are expected over most parts of Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and central to southern Uganda.
  • Drier than usual conditions are expected in a few regions in western and southern Tanzania.

Exceptional Rainfall 

  • Heavy rainfall (exceeding the 90th percentile) is expected over parts of Burundi and central to southern Tanzania.

Floods 13 – 20 February 2024

  • The moderate to heavy rainfall expected in central to southern regions of Tanzania is likely to cause flash floods in the flood-prone areas.

Temperature 13 – 20 February 2024 

  • Moderate to high temperatures (20-32℃) are expected over most parts of Tanzania and Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, southern Sudan, western and eastern Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia.
  • Mild temperature conditions (less than 20℃) are expected over parts of northern Sudan, central Ethiopia, central to western Kenya, and other isolated parts across the region.

Temperature anomalies

  • Warmer than usual temperatures are predicted over most parts of the GHA.
  • Cooler than usual temperatures are predicted in parts of northern Sudan and other isolated regions across the GHA.

Heat stress

  • Elevated levels of heat stress are expected in eastern Tanzania, eastern Kenya, southern Somalia, and most parts of South Sudan.

The weather forecasts are done by the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) authenticated by the World Meteorological Organization to offer weather studies for the Eastern Africa region.

The weather predictions are aimed at enhancing the responsiveness of the citizens in respective countries as they prepare for adversities like droughts or hefty rainfall depending on the prediction by the meteorologists and scientists.
