AstraZeneca Promotes Sustainability in Africa with Service Week

AstraZeneca has wrapped up its first-ever Week of Service across its African cluster, marking a significant step toward advancing community support and environmental sustainability. The initiative, held from September 16 to 20, 2024, saw employees from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa dedicate their time, skills, and resources to create a positive impact.

Focusing on sustainability and social well-being, the Week of Service featured activities aimed at addressing critical community needs. These included donations to orphanages, mentorship for vulnerable children, support for education, and environmental clean-up efforts. By integrating sustainability into its corporate responsibility agenda, AstraZeneca reinforced its mission to build Healthier, More Resilient Communities.

The campaign’s impact was felt across the six African countries where AstraZeneca operates. In Cameroon, employees donated food and essential goods to the Foundation Famille Chrétienne orphanage, ensuring vulnerable children had access to basic needs. In Ivory Coast, school kits were provided to the NGO Les Zinzins du Bonheur, supporting access to education for students. Meanwhile, in Senegal, the company extended support to the Nursery of Medina run by the Franciscan Sisters by supplying food and necessities for children in need.

In Ghana, AstraZeneca employees collected and distributed essential supplies to a local orphanage, promoting child welfare. In Kenya, they spent time at Morning Star Ministries Children’s Home, assisting with cooking, cleaning, mentoring, and offering gifts to the children. They also visited Victorious Joy Children’s Home, engaging with children and providing further support. In South Africa, employees carried out door-to-door donation drives, engaged in environmental clean-up activities, and supported children at the Princess Alice Adoption Home.

Deepak Arora, African Cluster Country President at AstraZeneca, emphasized the company’s focus on sustainable development through direct community engagement.

“Our success is deeply connected to the well-being of the communities where we live and work. The Week of Service allows our employees to give back and build a sustainable future. We are proud of the positive impact made by our team across Africa,” he said.

The initiative also highlighted AstraZeneca’s role in promoting sustainability through action. Employees participated in community-driven projects, reflecting a shift from passive support to active engagement in local development. By cleaning up the environment, supporting education, and providing essential goods, the company demonstrated how businesses can contribute to a greener, more equitable future.

This year’s Week of Service brought together 200 employees, who collectively contributed 1,600 hours of volunteer service. Through hands-on efforts, AstraZeneca showcased how companies can integrate sustainability principles into their operational and corporate social responsibility strategies.

For Amit Bhakri, Country Director for Sub-Sahara Africa at AstraZeneca, the experience was both humbling and inspiring.

“It was a rewarding experience to support children, promote education, and protect the environment. Working alongside colleagues who share this passion for change makes me proud to be part of AstraZeneca,” he said.
