The Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa is a haven for almost every animal species native to the region, including the iconic Big Five.
Over the years, the Pilanesberg Game Reserve has emerged as a crucial sanctuary for the rare rhino species. In such high-risk conservation areas, dependable communication systems are not just a convenience; they’re a lifeline for both wildlife protection and ranger safety.
In a significant technological upgrade, Pilanesberg recently transitioned from an aging analog communication system to a modern Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) solution, courtesy of global radio communications provider Hytera.
Working in partnership with Altron Nexus, now renamed Sentiv following a management buyout, Hytera donated a suite of high-performance communication tools to the park’s Anti-Poaching Unit, led by Field Ecologist Steve Dell.
The donation included a Hytera HR106X DMR repeater, Hytera H-series radios with GPS tracking, and a Smart Dispatch Plus software platform. These tools have transformed the park’s operations, enabling seamless, reliable communication across previously disconnected terrain.
“Reliable communication is the backbone of effective conservation and anti-poaching efforts, whether it’s protecting rhinos, managing wildfires, supporting technical teams, or safeguarding our field staff,” says Dell. “Upgrading to a digital radio network has significantly boosted our conservation operations.”
From Patchy Coverage to Park-Wide Connectivity
Before the upgrade, the reserve relied on a basic analog system with only one repeater, offering limited coverage and no data functionality.
In some mountainous zones, rangers operated without any signal, posing serious safety concerns during patrols and emergencies.
Today, Pilanesberg benefits from near-total coverage, thanks to a second repeater linked via microwave connection.
This digital shift allows the control room to maintain consistent communication with rangers, track their movements in real time, and dispatch help instantly in case of emergencies.
Key Features of the Hytera System
1. Enhanced Ranger Safety
- Man Down Alerts: Radios automatically detect if a ranger is motionless or has fallen, triggering an emergency signal with GPS location.
- Emergency Button: With a single press, rangers can send distress alerts to the control room for immediate response.
- Real-Time Tracking: Enables 24/7 monitoring of ranger movements in remote and rugged areas.
- Online/Offline Status Monitoring: Ensures the control center knows which devices are active.
2. Reliable Communication Infrastructure
- Extended Coverage: Multi-site repeaters linked via microwave ensure broad, uninterrupted coverage.
- Digital Voice and Data: Clear audio and messaging enhance team coordination.
- Voice Recording & Messaging: Useful for reviewing incidents and improving tactical operations.
3. Operational Intelligence and Security
- Patrol Analytics: Track ranger routes, speed, and direction, useful for post-event analysis and accountability.
- Encrypted Communication: With up to 256-bit encryption, the system ensures sensitive conversation data remains secure.
Pilanesberg Game Reserve Empowering Conservation at Scale
Covering 56,000 hectares of mountainous terrain, Pilanesberg had long faced communication blind spots that are now evaded through the strides undertaken.
Today, field teams conduct operations with improved confidence, knowing help is just a button away. The system’s GPS and alert functions have already proven critical in intercepting poaching threats and coordinating rapid response efforts.
“The park’s landscape is challenging, with valleys and ridges, but the digital network has ensured almost-total coverage,” adds Dell. “Tracking is vital, especially if someone cannot speak or respond. The system ensures visibility and instant action.”
Hytera’s impact goes beyond Pilanesberg since it is a digital solution that now supports several major parks across South Africa, including the Kruger National Park, Timbavati Game Reserve, and Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve.
“Our goal is to contribute meaningfully to sustainable conservation,” says Franco Stronach, Head of Indirect Channel at Hytera South Africa. “Alongside Sentiv, we’ve delivered a reliable, scalable system that’s empowering rangers and ecologists alike.”
Pilanesberg Game Reserve Invests in People and Knowledge
Beyond technology, Hytera has committed to building local capacity, which enables the empowerment of local communities.
The company hosts certified training sessions across South Africa, equipping resellers and distributors with system configuration skills and troubleshooting techniques. This support trickles down to end-users through practical training, operational demos, and round-the-clock maintenance.
With a growing network of resellers and service partners, the company ensures long-term sustainability of its systems across the country.
