The Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Penina Malonza has asked Kenyans to brace and embrace tolerance in matters concerning human-wildlife conflicts and incessant occurrences.
CS Malonza has pointed out the climate crisis that saw drought prolonged with less or no rainfall at all causing starvation as the leading cause for an increase in human-wildlife conflicts.
she has called on the citizens to embark on peacefully co-existing with the wildlife as the government works on ways of mitigating the problem of climate change that still affects numerous parts of the country.
“The animals equally deserve to live just like human beings hence the need to be protected them too. The drought has resulted in extreme hunger among human beings, wildlife, and domestic animals,” she said.
Attributing to the whole issue of climate change as a resulting factor for the drought witnessed across the nation.
speaking to the residents of Machakos County, CS Peninah Malonza called for less brutality from citizens when dealing with wildlife as they also need protection facing the severe challenges of the climate change crisis.
The CS assured those who were victims of these rampant human-wildlife conflicts compensations from the government in an accordingly manner for redress.
citing the minimal rainfall as having caused an increase in human-wildlife conflicts as everyone is in search of water, not forgetting that water is life. This in turn she points out as a reason for increased wildlife mortality mostly herbivore species.
“Ningependa kuwaomba ya kwamba, tuvumiliane kidogo. Nitaangalia mambo ya wanyama, na pia ya wanadamu kwa sababu hata hawa wanyama wamewamalizia maji yenu. Kwa hivyo, tutafanya kazi pamoja,” she said.
CS Malonza further promised to drill earth dams in parks across the country to bring an end to the conflict as the sector works together with Kenya Wildlife Service which has established a rapid response unit to patrol areas facing human–wildlife conflict across the country.
