IGAD-ICPAC Forecast Indicate Above-Normal Rainfall and Elevated Tempratures

According to the forecast released by the IGAD Climate Predictions and Applications Centre (ICPAC), the Eastern Africa region is expected to experience a mix of high rainfall and increased chances of drier conditions in some areas.

Based on the June to August 2025 IGAD-ICPAC seasonal outlook, indications show a higher likelihood of wetter-than-usual conditions across most parts of the region, while drier-than-usual conditions are anticipated in parts of north-western South Sudan and southern Sudan.

Seasonal temperatures are projected to be warmer than average, particularly over the northern, western, and eastern areas of the region.

June 2025 Rainfall Outlook

For June 2025, rainfall is forecasted to be normal to above-normal in western Kenya, northern and southern Somalia, and both western and parts of eastern Ethiopia.

Similar conditions are expected across much of Uganda, most parts of South Sudan, and the south-eastern, central, and south-western areas of Sudan.

Conversely, drier-than-normal conditions are anticipated over parts of western Ethiopia, western and north-eastern South Sudan, and central-southern Sudan.

June 2025 Temperature Forecast

The temperature outlook for June 2025 indicates warmer-than-usual conditions across northern Sudan, southern Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.

Near-normal temperatures are expected in central to eastern Sudan, central to eastern South Sudan, and north-western Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, cooler-than-average conditions are likely over north-eastern Sudan, western Eritrea, north-western Ethiopia, parts of Djibouti, and cross-border areas involving Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

IGAD-ICPAC June to August 2025 Seasonal Outlook

The seasonal rainfall forecast by IGAD-ICPAC, for June to August 2025, emphasizes wetter-than-usual conditions over most parts of the northern sector of the region. Citizens in these areas are urged to remain alert and prepared for possible impacts.

Drier-than-normal conditions are projected in limited areas, including southern Sudan, north-western South Sudan, and isolated regions in southern coastal Somalia and Kenya.

The general temperature outlook for the same period suggests warmer-than-average conditions over northern and southern Sudan, South Sudan, much of Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.

Near-normal temperatures are expected in central Sudan, north-western Ethiopia, and parts of south-western South Sudan.

Cooler-than-average temperatures may be recorded in isolated areas of northern Somalia, northern Ethiopia, parts of southern Djibouti, some regions in western and eastern Sudan, and the border areas shared by Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.
