I&M Foundation Denies Links to Commercial Development in Ngong Forest

I&M Foundation has issued a public statement to clarify the scope of its environmental initiative, Project Imarisha Ngong Road Forest (Sanctuary Block), following widespread public discourse and concerns over alleged development activities within the Ngong Road Forest.

The Foundation’s statement reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation and community involvement, emphasizing that the project is non-commercial and community-centred.

Project Imarisha Ngong Road Forest, launched in May 2024, is designed to restore degraded forest land, conserve biodiversity, and create inclusive green spaces aimed at promoting public well-being and climate resilience.

This came about amidst numerous claims from locals over the access of the forest by criminals who use it as an escape route after attacking pedestrians and locals using this road. As a way of addressing the issue, I&M Foundation, in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service and the Ngong Forest Community Forest Association, rallied together in the birth of this project.

“We recognize and respect the right of all stakeholders to raise matters of public interest and welcome constructive dialogue,” the Foundation stated.

The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service, followed a three-month public participation process.

The foundation’s statement reveals that consultations were conducted with the Ngong Road Community Forest Association and local administrative units in Lang’ata, Dagoretti South, and Kibera sub-counties to ensure alignment with local needs and environmental regulations.

According to the Foundation, the activities under the Imarisha Ngong Road Forest project are strictly limited to the development of Green Park Infrastructure: Construction of ablution blocks, ranger housing, and the fencing of 14.2 kilometres within the sanctuary forest block.

Secondly, it entails forest Restoration, which includes the establishment of a tree nursery, regeneration of degraded areas, and the development of new walking trails to encourage nature appreciation.

Thirdly, the creation of water infrastructure involving borehole drilling, water reticulation systems, and installation of water points to sustain both the nursery and park operations.

The Foundation also clarified that neither it nor I&M Bank is associated with any hospitality development linked to the forest.

“I&M Foundation and I&M Bank categorically state that they are not involved in, nor were they aware of, any hospitality development project that has been circulating in social and mainstream media,” the statement read.

I&M Foundation emphasized its commitment to transparency, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development, and expressed willingness to continue engaging with stakeholders to ensure the initiative’s long-term success.

“We will continue to work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure this initiative delivers lasting conservation benefits for both people and the planet,” the Foundation affirmed.
