Weather Outlook for the Greater Horn of Africa 17th-24th June

The Greater Horn of Africa is expected to experience varied rainfall and temperature patterns in the coming period. Enhanced rainfall is forecast over western Kenya, much of Uganda, eastern South Sudan, and western Ethiopia.

In these areas, rainfall is likely to exceed the 90th percentile, meaning it will be among the highest 10% of recorded levels, especially in central to western Kenya, northeastern Uganda, parts of eastern South Sudan, and western Ethiopia.

Moderate rainfall, ranging between 50 and 200 mm, is expected in western Ethiopia, South Sudan, southern parts of Sudan, much of Uganda, and western Kenya.

Greater Horn of Africa

Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is forecast over southern Uganda, coastal and northwestern Kenya, southern and northern Somalia, central to eastern Ethiopia, and central Sudan.

Above-average rainfall is anticipated in central to western Kenya, large parts of Uganda, eastern South Sudan, western to southwestern Ethiopia, and isolated areas in northern and southern Somalia, as well as southwestern Sudan.

Conversely, below-average rainfall is expected in southern Sudan, western Eritrea, central to northern Ethiopia, central to western South Sudan, and southeastern Uganda.

Greater Horn of Africa

There is a likelihood of flooding in flood-prone areas, especially in central-western Kenya and localized regions in eastern South Sudan and western Ethiopia.

Temperature forecasts indicate that high temperatures above 32℃ will affect southeastern Sudan, the Afar region of Ethiopia, Djibouti, northern coastal Somalia, and parts of coastal Eritrea.

Moderate to high temperatures (20–32℃) are expected across most of South Sudan and Sudan, central to northern Uganda, western and eastern Tanzania, eastern and northern Kenya, southeastern Ethiopia, and much of Somalia.

Greater Horn of Africa

Mild temperatures below 20℃ are likely in Rwanda, Burundi, southern Uganda, central to southern Tanzania, and central to western parts of Kenya and Ethiopia.

Overall, warmer than usual conditions are expected across much of the Greater Horn of Africa region, except for northern Sudan, where cooler than normal temperatures are likely.
