Britam General Insurance has launched a specialized Electric Vehicle (EV) insurance product in Kenya, a significant move that supports the nation’s transition to sustainable mobility.
This comprehensive coverage caters to both fully electric and hybrid vehicles, positioning Britam as a pioneer in Kenya’s evolving low-carbon transportation sector.
The launch responds directly to the country’s shift toward green mobility, as outlined in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s Draft National e-Mobility Policy, which targets having EVs represent 5% of all new vehicle registrations by 2025.
Britam’s innovative solution addresses the growing EV market while tackling unique challenges owners face, such as high-cost battery replacements and specialized maintenance needs.
According to James Mbithi, CEO and Principal Officer of Britam General Insurance, the new offering emphasizes the company’s commitment to innovation and dedication to supporting Kenya’s sustainable transport future.
“The introduction of this EV insurance demonstrates Britam’s commitment to innovation and our dedication to supporting Kenya’s sustainable transport future,” said Mr. Mbithi. “Through this specialized coverage, we are not only meeting emerging customer demands but also contributing to responsible market growth in the green mobility sector.”
A key feature of the package is the exclusive Battery Protect Cover Extension, which provides crucial protection for the vehicle’s most valuable components: the battery and electric motor systems.
Additional specialized benefits include coverage for personal charging equipment and an innovative out-of-charge recovery service that transports stranded vehicles to the nearest charging station.
Beyond EV-specific protection, the insurance includes comprehensive coverage against standard risks like accidental damage, theft, fire, flooding, and vandalism.
Policyholders also benefit from political violence and terrorism protection, a courtesy vehicle, roadside assistance, and excess protection within Britam’s established motor insurance framework.
With affordability as a priority, the product offers flexible premium payment options, including both lump-sum and monthly installment plans. The coverage also extends to privately owned electric motorcycles, broadening its appeal to meet Kenya’s diverse transport needs.
This initiative reinforces Britam’s broader environmental commitment, exemplified by the installation of three EV charging stations (with six ports) and a 183-panel solar carport at its Nairobi headquarters. These tangible investments reflect the company’s authentic dedication to sustainable business practices and environmental stewardship.
