Climate Crisis: Parents Intoxicating Children to Curb Severe Hunger

The grappling hunger situation in the country has kept pushing hungry citizens to measures beyond thought in an attempt to cope with starvation.

As the drought and starvation incessantly threaten lives, in a report by Citizen, it has emerged that some parents from a village in Kiambu County have embraced the intoxication of the children to evade their complaints for food and have them stay in bed longer.

The move is a violation of the Children’s Act of Kenya which advocates for the protection of children below 18 years old from mistreatment, abuse, and such vices.

Gwakimori Makwa village elder Mr. Peter Weru Kimani warned the said parents, noting that some were even giving their children bhang.

“We have indeed had isolated cases where parents give their children, most of whom are not able to attend school, illicit brew hoping it will help to cushion them from noticing their hunger,” he said.

There has been a group of youth who have resorted to donating some foodstuff to the villagers with an aim to assist mitigate the pangs of the situation in the area.

However, the efforts are barely minimal to deal with the effect suffered from starvation hence they are calling on the national government to chip in and consider the central region in their relief food distribution.

Based on the village elder, most children haven’t been attending school due to the biting hunger that has left most families struggling to put food on the table even a meal a day.

“This is a very disturbing situation, and we need urgent intervention to improve the situation before we lose a generation just because we struggle to put food on the table,” said Kimani.
