Mission 300 Powering 300 Million Africans to Gain Electricity

The Mission 300 African Energy Summit has brought together African Heads of State, private sector leaders, development partners, and civil society in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Taking place on January 27-28, 2025, the summit’s central goal is to expand electricity access across the continent and define clear steps to transform Africa’s energy sector. With a focus on addressing energy poverty, the gathering emphasizes the need for reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy as a foundation for economic growth.

Currently, an estimated 600 million people in Africa live without electricity, a stark reminder of the continent’s energy challenges despite heightened calls for a Just Transition. In response, African leaders have committed to bridging this energy gap and improving lives.

In partnership with the World Bank Group, the African Development Bank Group, and other stakeholders like Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), and The Rockefeller Foundation, a mission has been launched to provide electricity to 300 million people across Africa by 2030.

Mission 300 is a bold and collaborative initiative that seeks to combine increased infrastructure investment with comprehensive policy reforms across the electricity supply chain. The summit serves as more than a meeting of leaders; it is a platform for fostering collaborations and securing commitments to address the energy constraints that hinder progress.

According to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, the forum is a bold step towards achieving the 2030 goal of getting 300 million more Africans electricity. “Together we can create a future where, across our vast continent energy transforms lives, powers industries, and fuels vibrant economies,” said President Samia.

The partnerships and agreements emerging from the summit aim to pave the way toward universal energy access. Mission 300 is a transformative agenda expected to uplift millions of lives, drive sustainable development, and create much-needed job opportunities. Energy is increasingly recognized as a critical prerequisite for development, and universal access has become an urgent priority.

The summit is set to yield two significant outcomes: First, the Dar es Salaam Energy Declaration will outline commitments and practical actions for reforming energy sectors across African nations. Second, National Energy Compacts will provide country-specific blueprints, complete with targets and timelines for implementing key reforms.

In its first phase, 12 countries are set to present their energy compacts: Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia. Additional countries are expected to follow in subsequent phases.

With growing calls for universal energy access, the summit’s emphasis on leveraging new technologies and innovative financing methods is poised to play a crucial role in achieving its ambitious goals. By tackling energy poverty head-on, the Mission 300 initiative aims to unlock Africa’s potential, driving progress and fostering a sustainable future for the continent.
